A Summer Success Story

So I added tweetboard alpha to my ning mostly as an experiment.

I was showing it off yesterday to some of the guys here at school, and I posted a tweet about registration.

I got the following email this morning from a student:

"I'm sorry to bother you but i had no idea of any registration cause i had been gone and im not living with my parents so I haven't recieved any mail i Just want to know what's going on… Continue

Compare & Contrast: With regard to what?

Student comparison diagram of the anatomy, physiology and inferred behavioral characteristics of both a crayfish and a grasshopper.

This strategic look at comparisons is an adaptation of an academic paper I wrote this past year. I dampened it a bit, but I didn't do a full rewrite. Sorry in advance for the impersonal tone. I had strong enough positive feedback on this one that I thought it might have justified a wider audience. So here it is... we'll see I suppose. Also, this is a pretty straight-up look at a direct strategic… Continue

How to be "right" more than twice per day

Something every classroom teacher want to know, right?

Eyes past print

Modeling fluent reading. Introduction of outside text every period of every day in every class. The opportunity to bring relevance to adolescents. With whole-school immersion in text and reading, ideas and concepts naturally follow. The teacher reads, the student follow along a copy of the text. Content-area literacy expert, Janet Allen calls… Continue

Google Docs Rocks My Socks!!!

I wrote this in response to the Google Docs discussion but thought that it might be more appropriate here...

"Russell, this is awesome!!! I just finished collaborating with my Science Inv. students on Google docs. They were able to work on presentations seamlessly from school and home. They could also share their presentations with me so that I could view them in my leisure (from home on the web). I even had a student who couldn't open her presentation at Missouri Western on their… Continue

Non-Honors success in biology

In Biology we are experimenting with a variety of ways to incorporate web tools into the classroom. One such experiment led us into creating "posters" about energy transfer from web-based paint tools. I was able to upload all the pictures into an Animoto video and show the students a compilation of all the work at the beginning of the next period (while secretly infusing some key principles into the video that I wanted them to remember). It was refreshing to… Continue

LA9 Success Stories

Where do I begin?

I've got students who I've never heard speak in class (my bad) posting responses to deep questions. Intelligent responses, at that.

I have students shouting across the room about how awesome the other one's personification blog is.

In the few minutes I've been typing this blog, I had to take a break to respond to another student's message on our ning. Here's our exchange:

Me: "I sure can. This month's is a powerpoint project, but you… Continue

Creative Writing Success Stories

Ning has completely changed the way creative writing (CW) runs. Last year, CW was fun, but a giant pain as each month I had several hundred extra pages of writing to grade.

This year, after having the students post their drafts as blogs, I can grade them quickly and efficiently without lugging a load of papers back and forth. The students can even decide who has access to their stories online.

I've even integrated technology into the revision process with wordle.net. The… Continue

That's it. My advice is start slow. This web-based stuff can overwhelm you if you take it all on at once with 120 students. Last year, I signed ALL my students up for moodle and created a different…Continue
